Dragging a grappled creature: ten feet can cost twenty in DMGrid

If a Medium creature drags another grappled Medium creature, ten feet travelled cost twenty feet of movement under the 2024 rules. With 30 feet available and no other costs, 10 remain. In DMGrid, use the board and notes to represent the change and record the table’s decision; do not assume the app applies this rule for you.

First identify who moves whom

Imagine a Medium adventurer with a Speed of 30 has another Medium creature grappled. The grapple remains active and the adventurer wants to travel 10 feet with them over normal ground. Each foot of that segment costs the grappler one extra foot: 10 + 10 = 20 feet of movement. If no movement was spent earlier, 10 remain.

The Grappled creature has Speed 0 and that Speed cannot increase while the condition lasts, but the rule allows the grappler to drag or carry it when moving. Do not confuse its Speed with the movement the adventurer pays. This example adds no Difficult Terrain, climbing or other effects; if they appear, consult their costs before resolving the route.

The exception depends on the grappled creature

The official 2024 rule does not add that extra foot if the grappled creature is Tiny or at least two size categories smaller than the grappler. Looking small on the map is not enough: compare their game sizes. Nor does being close on the board establish that a grapple exists.

Before moving them, check who maintains the condition and the grapple’s range. If movement or an effect separates the creatures beyond that range, the condition ends under the rules. Particular effects and your table’s chosen rules edition may change the resolution.

From the calculation to the DMGrid scene

  1. On the board, identify both tokens and the proposed route; consult distance with the documented measuring tools.
  2. Apply the rule and any relevant exception manually before accepting the destination. In this example, record the 20-foot cost and 10 feet remaining in your session notes.
  3. Represent both creatures’ final positions and note who grapples whom if that helps on the next turn. Check with the group how the range is maintained.

DMGrid brings a board, ruler and notes together for a local campaign. The product page does not establish automatic application of this condition. Foundry documents distance and movement measurement; Drag Ruler describes an additional module and its dependencies. These are approaches consulted on 29 October 2026, not a comparative test. Check DMGrid and your table’s rules edition before preparing the encounter.
