They vanished beside the enemy: represent teleportation in DMGrid

Under the D&D 2024 Basic Rules, teleporting does not provoke an Opportunity Attack. When a creature disappears beside an enemy and appears elsewhere, do not turn its token’s new position into a journey it never made.

DMGrid lets you represent positions on a tactical board, check distances and keep notes. The effect’s rules and your table determine the outcome; a range circle or the act of dragging a piece cannot decide it on their own.

One destination, two situations

Consider this fictional scene with no additional special effects: an adventurer stands beside a guard who can see her and still has a Reaction. An empty square lies beyond the guard’s reach.

If she walks out of reach, the conditions for an Opportunity Attack may be met. If a valid effect teleports her to that empty square, the general rule excludes that attack for teleporting. The destination can be identical while the way she gets there changes the resolution.

The official 2024 Basic Rules explain both the requirement to see a creature leaving your reach and the teleportation exception. This guide grants no new ability: an effect must actually permit the teleport, and its conditions must be satisfied.

Check three things before relocating the piece

Read the particular effect. Confirm that it really teleports the creature and check the permitted destination. This general explanation does not establish that any wall can be crossed, any square selected or another creature brought along.

Resolve the resource used. Avoiding this Opportunity Attack does not make the effect free. Any Action, Bonus Action, use or spell slot depends on its description. Resolve that before updating resources.

Represent the destination and note the reason if useful. Update the DMGrid piece to reflect the table’s resolution. A suggested session note is “teleport resolved; did not walk out of reach”. That is authored example text, not an automatic application label.

Do not draw a route across intermediate squares as evidence that the creature passed through them. Do not spend the guard’s Reaction on an attack that this rule does not trigger.

What DMGrid contributes

The DMGrid product brief documents a tactical board, pieces, turn order, hit points, distance ruler and notes. It is a Windows 5E campaign manager designed for an in-person table, with campaigns saved on the computer. We do not claim that it detects teleports or automatically enforces all their rules.

If you want a board for representing this kind of scene, review the product and demonstrations before buying the beta. The tool records the representation; reading the effect together avoids spending a Reaction merely because a piece ended up far away.
