Decide the rule, then what the group sees
Manually hiding a piece in DMGrid manages screen information; it does not establish that the character succeeded at Hide. Resolve your game’s conditions first, then decide what information to show players.
DMGrid documents manual piece/area visibility, Player View and session notes. We do not attribute an automatic Stealth roll or complete Hide resolution to the software.
A wall and a pending check
An authored example using the free 2024 rules: a scout moves behind a wall providing Total Cover and is out of enemies’ line of sight. She wants to Hide, rather than disappearing because the DM presses a visibility control.
The official 2024 glossary requires a successful DC 15 Dexterity (Stealth) check while Heavily Obscured or behind Three-Quarters or Total Cover, out of enemies’ line of sight. Insufficient cover does not become sufficient because a token is hidden.
Suppose the check total is 17 and requirements are met. The rule grants the Invisible condition while hidden and asks you to note the total: that 17 is the DC of a creature’s Wisdom (Perception) check to find her. This is neither a tested game report nor another edition’s rule.
Prepare tracking in DMGrid
- Position the piece and review scene, cover and lines of sight with the table.
- Resolve the action and check using your agreed rules.
- Keep the result and relevant enemies in your notes without accidentally disclosing private information.
- Adjust piece visibility and Player View according to what should be shown.
The note retains the ruling rather than replacing it. Players may know where a piece was even when it is no longer visible. Nor should “explored” fog be confused with proof that someone is hidden.
Review when hiding ends
Under this 2024 rule, hiding can end when making a sound louder than a whisper, being found by an enemy, making an attack roll or casting a spell with a Verbal component. Review the actual event before retaining the state by inertia.
DMGrid’s product facts explain the Windows beta and table tools. Inspect the presentation and demonstrations before buying. The software helps you run and remember the scene; rules decisions and shared information still require your judgement.
