The wall blocks the target: total cover is not another AC bonus in DMGrid

Total cover changes the question before the roll

If an obstacle completely covers the target from the attack’s origin, total cover prevents direct targeting. It is not resolved by adding another Armor Class bonus. First decide whether that direct attack can target the creature; the roll and applicable modifiers come afterwards.

This guide uses the 2024 D&D Basic Rules. DMGrid supports position representation and keeping a table ruling here; we do not claim it automatically resolves cover.

Three degrees, three consequences

The official Cover section distinguishes:

  • Half cover: +2 to AC and Dexterity saving throws.
  • Three-quarters cover: +5 to AC and Dexterity saving throws.
  • Total cover: the target cannot be targeted directly.

The benefit depends on the attack or effect originating on the opposite side of the obstacle. Multiple sources do not add their degrees together; only the most protective applies. A creature’s sheet does not turn that spatial relationship into a permanent bonus against every attacker.

A wall between two positions

Fictional example: an archer stands south of a solid wall that completely covers an opponent on the other side. For this direct attack, do not write “AC +5 because the wall is large” or roll in the hope of beating any number. Check total cover before declaring the target.

If the archer changes position in the fiction, evaluate the relationship again from the new origin. We do not assume any movement removes cover: it depends on the positions and obstacle defined at your table.

Area effects and specific feature exceptions require their own text. The bow example does not settle every spell, and cover should not be confused with simply being unable to see someone.

What to prepare in DMGrid

The DMGrid product facts document a tactical board, pieces, distance ruler, area shapes and session notes. Use positions to explain the question and your own note to preserve the ruling: “From the south, the wall gives total cover; review if the origin changes.” This is a manual suggestion, not a new field or program detector.

Hiding a piece from players is a separate control; it does not itself establish cover. A visible miniature does not remove a wall present in the scene either.

Check the workflow before choosing the tool

DMGrid is a paid Windows beta for in-person games run from one computer, with campaigns saved locally. It does not offer browser multiplayer rooms. Read the presentation and decide whether that workflow fits your table. For the next attack, settle the cover category first: total does not mean a higher AC.
